On November 22, 2017 occurred a meeting between the rector of the St. Cyril and Methodius academy of post-graduate and doctoral studies, the head of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk and Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury.
The meeting took place in the central hall of the academy. Among the participant were Archbishop Elisey of Sourozh, Ambassador of New Zealand in the Russian Federation Ian Hill, Deputy Head of the Diplomatic Mission of Ireland to the Russian Federation Robert Mead, teachers and students of the academy, staff of the Department for External Church Relations, the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Service and MSPU.
From the side of our university were present the rector of MSPU Alexey Vladimirovich Lubkov, the Vice-Rector for Development, Vasily Strakhov, the Director of the Institute of Foreign Languages Sergey Alexandrovich Zasorin, the Director of the Institute of International Education Natalia Zamerchenko, the Deputy Head of the International Relations Department Olga Alexandrovna Morozova, the Assistant to the Rector Nikolay Stepanovich Buzulukov and teachers and students of MPSU.
In the beginning of the event, Metropolitan Hilarion said: «One of the areas of our is the coordination of relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Church of England. In the program for postgraduate study we are actively working towards academic exchange. The Archbishop yesterday held talks with His Holiness Patriarch Kirill. As a result of this meeting a joint declaration was signed. This document calls on the international community to support persecuted Christians in the Middle East.»
The Archbishop of Canterbury dedicated his speech to Christian anthropology, having examined it not only from the theological but also from the philosophical positions. The speaker paid special attention to the results of the Orthodox-Anglican theological dialogue.
Archbishop Justin Welby of Canterbury believes that given the past 70 years of official atheism, in Russia we can state the «greatest revival» of religious life. This is Welby’s first visit to Russia.
