Parallel Degree Agreement Signed between Moscow Pedagogical State University and the University of London

A solemn ceremony marking the signature of the parallel degree agreement between Moscow Pedagogical State University and the University of London was held on 27 July 2018 in London.
The MPGU delegation headed by Rector Lubkov included Natalya Zamerchenko, Director of the Institute of International Education of MPGU, and Andrey Kuznetsov, Deputy Director of the Institute of International Education. The Office of International Relations of MPGU was represented by Olga Morozova, Deputy Head of the Department.
On the behalf of the University of London, the ceremony was attended by Dr Mary Stiasny OBE, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) and Chief Executive, University of London Worldwide, Mike Winter OBE, Director of Global Engagement, and Lewis McKinnon, Regional Business Development Manager Central and South Asia. Goldsmiths, University of London was represented by Dr Jane Desmarais, Senior Lecturer in English and Deputy Head of Department, Wendy McDonald, Executive Officer and Margaret Stern, Programme Administrator.
In her introductory speech, Dr Stiasny noted that the University of London is the largest in the UK in terms of the number of domestic and foreign students. The relationship with Moscow Pedagogical State University undergraduate programme in English Language and International Communication with the BA English will be the first of its kind in the University of London’s history. The University of London, which was the first in the history of England to admit women as degree candidates 150 years ago, attaches great importance to cooperation with Moscow Pedagogical State University, whose history dates back to 1872, when Moscow Higher Women’s Courses, the pioneer of higher education for women in Russia, were founded.
Alexey Lubkov noted that cooperation in the field of education and science between MPGU and British universities has a long tradition. The world-famous scholar Professor Vernadsky, who was Rector of the Moscow Higher Women’s Courses, conducted research and teaching work in England. ‘Fruitful cooperation with foreign colleagues as well as interest in British history, literature and culture is the hallmark of the work of other outstanding professors and scholars of MPGU.
The sides expressed hope that the integration of the traditions of Russian higher school, to which MPGU has always been committed, together with the standards of British education represented by the University of London broadens the horizons of the cooperation between the two countries and will be beneficial for education, science and culture in Russia and the United Kingdom.
The parallel degree programme of MPGU and the University of London is realised on the basis of the Institute of International Education of MPGU and Goldsmiths, University of London. The first students are due to begin their studies at the Institute of International Education of MPGU in September, 2018.
