About faculty

The philological faculty was founded in 1900. At different periods of time it has counted among prominent scholars A.A.Reformatski, A.F.Losev, F.F.Fortunatov, V.V. Vinogradov, M.A.Rybnikova, N.K.Piksanov, A.M.Peshkovsky, V.O.Kljuchevsky, A.N.Veselovsky, P.N. Sakulin, N.M Korinsky, B.I.Purishev, S.I.Sheshukov, L.U.Maksimov, A.V.Ternovsky, A.V.Tekuchev, M.T.Baranov, S.N.Krjuchkov, N.I.Prokofiev, N.P.Mihalskaya, T.A.Ladyzhenskaya.

More than 10 scientific schools exist at the faculty, there work about 150 members of the staff, over 90 % of which are holders of doctoral and candidate degrees. The faculty houses 5 doctoral thesis committees (with the right to defend candidate thesis): «The theory and methods of teaching and educating (the Russian language and literature)», «Russian literature», «Study of folklore», «Literature of  peoples of Russia (literature of peoples of the Volga region)», «Literature of peoples of foreign countries (West European literature)», «Russian», «Comparative-historical, typological and comparative linguistics».

There is V.I.Dahl educational scientific center with modern multimedia facilities, 2 computer classes, a library with the reading room equipped with computers with the Internet access.

Educational practical training holds a special place in faculty life. In spring term students set off to various regions of Russia to have a folklore and dialectological practice. Being in higher terms, students undergo two pedagogical training sessions under the guidance of skilled methodologists at the best schools of Moscow. Students of journalism branch undergo practical training in leading Russian mass media among which we can name “The Smena”, «The New World», «Science and Life», «The Messenger of Education», «The Science and School», radio stations — «Moscow speaks», «Mayak-24», «Ekho Moskvy», «Siti-FM», TV channels — «First channel», «Russia», «TV Center», «Culture», news agencies «RIA Novosti news agency», «ITAR-TASS», «Interfax», etc.

Numerous students’ creative associations work at the faculty, we organize regular meetings with known writers, poets and scientists.

Students of the faculty receive social support including various kinds of material aid or free rest during summer and winter vacations. The philological faculty actively cooperates with International contacts board of MPSU to achieve a high level of student’s mobility, giving possibility to students to train and carry out a part of their curriculum abroad.

It is possible to say without any exaggeration that faculty graduates take the most direct part in political life of the country (V.Lukin, A.Marshak, L.Kofman, etc.). Our graduates once were and have remained the elite of our national culture: among them there are scholars (B.I.Purishev, S.I.Sheshukov, V.I.Korovin, S.N.Tsejtlin, E.Han-Pira, etc.), known teachers and directors of schools (S.R.Boguslavsky, I.D.Demakova-Oltarzhevskaya, T.Fedorova, etc.), poets and writers (J.Koval, V.Korzhikov, V.Pietsuh, M.Roschin, etc.), bards (J.Vizbor, J.Kim, B.Vahnjuk, V.Egorov, V.Dolina, J.Rjashentsev, etc.), media directors (P.Fomenko, G.Babushkin, etc.), actors (S.Jakovenko, V.Krasnovsky, L.Barashkov, etc.), journalists (M.Kusurgashev, A.Taraskin, O.Vorobev, V.Slavin, etc.), radio- and TV presenters (V.Dvortsev, E.Kovrigina, N.Metlina, V.Utkin, J.Bogdanov, etc.).

Faculty history

Moscow Pedagogical State University is the oldest pedagogical high school of Russia. Moscow Higher Female Courses of Gere, which built basis of future MPSU, began their work on November 1st, 1872.

The block of philological disciplines was the most representative in the structure of curriculum at the courses. The Russian literature was taught by such well-known scholars as N.S.Tihonravov, the professor of Moscow State University, the literary critic and the specialist in the study of old texts, A.N. Veselovsky, the best expert on the French literature and the theater, emphasizing the western influence on the Russian literature, a lecturer of history of West European literature in Moscow State University, V.F.Miller, the specialist in folklore and ethnographer. The history of arts was read by the outstanding Russian philologist and the art critic academician F.I.Buslaev.

When Moscow Higher Female Courses were transformed into the second Moscow State University, it included a pedagogical branch. In 1921 the pedagogical faculty was organized in the second Moscow State University by professor K.N.Kornilov, who became its dean. In 1922 the pedagogical faculty had already several branches: preschool branch, branch of schools of stage I, socio-economic, literary-linguistic, physic-mathematical and bio-geographical branches. The pedagogical faculty developed promptly and by the end of 1923 more than 1800 students were trained there.

The post of the Russian and literature Faculty Dean was held in different years by professors F.M.Golovenchenko,  S.I.Sheshukov, honourable professor N.P.Mihalskaya, the honored worker of science of the Russian Federation V.A.Lukov, the corresponding member of the Russian Open Society O.Y.Bogdanova, N.A.Ippolitova, A.D.Dejkina. Now Olga Jurevna Knyazeva, the professor, the candidate of pedagogical sciences, the known expert in the field of rhetoric and speech organization, the head of rhetoric and standard of speech department fulfills the duty of the dean of the philological faculty
Lectures of the philological faculty are famous scholars, authors of school and higher school textbooks and manuals, winners of the State awards, academicians, professors, doctors of sciences and humanities. Their names are known not only in Russia, but also far beyond it: professor T.A.Ladyzhensky, professor L.A.Trostentsova, professor V.V.Babajtseva, professor A.D.Dejkina, professor T.M.Pahnova, senior lecturer L.J.Komissarova are the authors of textbooks on the Russian language for secondary school; honourable professor L.M.Krupchanov, professor V.I.Korovin, professor V.V.Agenosov, professor L.A.Trubina, professor V.F.Chertov, etc. are the authors of school textbooks on Russian literature and the XX century literature; professor A.K.Mihalskaya is the author of the textbook on rhetoric for pupils of 10-11 grades. At the philological faculty worked N.P.Mihalskaya, the honourable professor MPSU, the author of textbooks on world literature; professors O.Y.Bogdanova and S.А. Leonov, the authors of a teaching and methodical complex on a methodology of literature teaching, textbooks on literature for pupils of 10-11 grades.

There have been many good traditions at the faculty, one of which is generations of scientists and teachers (the Prokofievs, the Tekuchevy, the Mihalskis, the Trofimovs, etc.)
