The new holiday was declared by the United Nations General Assembly as an attempt to acknowledge the role of education in establishing peace and development worldwide. On January, 24 UNESCO invites all the countries to join forces in providing high-quality education for everyone.
Head of the General Assembly, Audrey Azoulay, said that “Education is our most effective instrument to secure significant improvement of health standards, stimulation of economic growth, implementation of innovations — everything that we need to build resilient and sustainable communities”.
According to UNESCO figures, 262 million of children and young people do not attend schools, 617 million of children and teenagers cannot read or calculate, less than 40% of girls in the south region of Sahara desert get secondary education and about 4 million refugee children and young people do not attend school.
On the International Day of Education is celebrated right before the Day of Student in Russia. Russia is proud to have the highest number of highly-educated people. We hope that today’s students will contribute to the development of Russian education and science according to the high international standards.
