Science

Artesian archaeological expedition
Expedition leader: head of the Department of ancient world and middle ages, the doctor of historical
Sciences, Professor N. And. Vinokurov.
The main scientific achievement of the expedition is opening of the site of the artesian layer of fire dated back to Bosporan-Roman war 44/45-49 AD. Here in large numbers were found: simple pottery jugs and bowls, fine red-gloss vessels, Bosporan bronze and gold coins, a Roman iron sword, an iron trilobate arrowheads of arrows, fragments of swords and daggers, remains of other weapons, plates and flakes of armor, silver and bronze vessels, crushed and melted glass jugs, unique jewelry, a variety of tools and metal parts of clothing. The most interesting findings were the remains of two wooden boxes with women’s ornaments, jewelry, Bosporan and Roman coins, and remains of other treasures. They were buried before the fire and probably served as underground sacrifices to the gods in moments of extreme danger. Many finds from the layer of fire, including last coins of king Mithradates VIII, 46/47 AD, are unique and were never seen before not only in the study of the site, but also other monuments of the antique Bosporus.

Scientific school of V. N. Dyakov. “History of ancient civilization”
A number of future directions of the school of V. N. Dyakov had been developed before he started
work in the educational Institute and are associated with the name of Professor Alexei
S. Bashkirov, who taught in the II Moscow State University in 1922-1924. Alex Stepanovich
Bashkirov (1885-1963) was an archaeologist and antiquity researcher, doctor of historical Sciences, Professor, specialist in ancient history, art and architecture, ethnographer and local historian, culturologist, one
of the founders of the national paleoseismology. He is also the author of several monographs, numerous scientific
articles and publications, popularizer of ancient history and archaeology; organizer of more than
fifty scientific expeditions to the Crimea, the Caucasus and Transcaucasia, Volga region and Central
Asia. The work of this researcher in the walls of II Moscow State University has laid a solid
Foundation for the future development of classical studies in the educational Institute. In 1935
Vladimir Nikolayevich Dyakov (1882-1959) began his career in the walls of our University, and
subsequently was put in charge of the Department of history of the Ancient world (1938-1950).
The main subject of schools V. N. Diacov was «Rome and its province». V. N. Dyakov successfully
leaded the scientific work of his classical school. His subordinates studied the history of the Roman
provinces of the Balkan region and individual localities of the Black Sea region. Among the disciples
and followers of the scientist many prominent people has worked a long time at the Department of history of the Ancient
World and Middle ages, such as doctor of historical Sciences, Professor G. A. Koshelenko, PhD,
Professor L. S. Elias, PhD, Professor G. T. Kalubowila, Ph. D., Assoc. I. N. Sviridov, PhD, Assoc.
A. V. Yudin. A special place among them is occupied by Gennadi A. Koshelenko (21.1.1935, Moscow) –
doctor of historical Sciences (1978); Professor, member-correspondent of the Russian Academy of
Sciences (2009), head of the Department of ancient History and middle ages (1980-90). In 1957 he
graduated from the historical faculty of Moscow State University. He was also a
Student of Professor V. D. Blavatsky. After graduation worked
as a history teacher in the Khabarovsk territory. Back in Moscow, began working as a librarian in the Public library.

Scientific school of V. F. Semenov
The Department of History of the middle ages was based on the historical faculty of Moscow State
University of Education in the 30-ies of XX century as an independent unit functioned until 1950, prior
to the merger with the Department of ancient History. Naturally, the two academic disciplines –
antiquity and the middle ages united scholars in the organizational plan. Scientific activity was
determined by the head of the Department, taking into account individual research interests
and the relevance of the problem.
The Department of History of the middle ages was headed by Professor Gratsiansky N. P.(before
1945) and Professor V. F. Semyonov (from 1945 — head of the Department of History of the middle ages;
from 1950 — the head. the Department of ancient History and middle ages).
Nicholas Graciansky became the founder of the scientific school «the Early middle Ages. The
Genesis of the social political system in the period of transition from antiquity to the middle ages».
This issue was topical in the Russian historiography of XIX-XX centuries and remains so with the
new challenges in the study of ideology, religion and culture, historical and biographical portraits of the
public, politicians and Church leaders. N. P.Graciansky’s work was continued at the school of social
stories, developed in Russia by P. G. Vinogradov, A. N. Savin and D. M. Petrushevskii. P. G.
Vinogradov, A. N. Savin and D. M. Petrushevsky supervised the training of scientific staff on
MUWC.
V. F. Semenov, as a student of D. M. Petrushevsky and O. N. Savina, was working at the Department of
History of the middle ages in 1943, and created his own school of studying the history of England in the
middle ages. Thus the second direction of scientific activity of Professor V. F. Semenov and
his many disciples arouse – «Western Europe of the XVIth century and the Genesis of capitalism in
England». However, he gave credit to research activities within the framework of established
school of N. P.Gruzinskiy – «The Early Middle Ages. The Genesis of the social political system in
the transitional period from antiquity to the middle ages».
